The Florida AFL-CIO announced its opposition to Amendment 4 today, joining a coalition of business, builder and community groups seeking to defeat the proposed constitutional amendment that would require a public referendum on changes to a community’s comprehensive growth plan.
The union group says it’s one of more than 280 “leading business, civic and labor groups that are working to defeat the measure in November.”
“Defeating Amendment 4 means protecting jobs,” said Frank Ortis, President of the Florida State Council of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and a board member with the Florida AFL-CIO. “As Floridians attempt to recover from the worst recession in a generation, Amendment 4 threatens to drive the jobless rate higher, prolong the recession, and hurt our state’s working families.”
The activists who got the amendment on the ballot by signature-petition say it’s a response to local elected officials who’ve failed to stand up to developers and allowed excessive development throughout the state.
