(ORLANDO, FL - October 11, 2007) Pensacola attorney Phillip Howell has joined the fight against the so-called Hometown Democracy amendment in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, according to Floridians for Smarter Growth (FSG). As the group’s new General Chairperson for the Pensacola area, Mr. Howell will lead the local campaign to defeat the proposed constitutional amendment.

“Phillip Howell has been a positive force in his community for years,” said Mark Wilson, FSG Treasurer and Florida Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President. “A respected attorney and business leader, Mr. Howell is also well-known for his dedication to a variety of non-profit civic groups.”

“We need to protect our state’s unique quality-of-life for future generations, so smarter growth is a must,” Mr. Howell said. “But it’s clear to me Hometown Democracy will result in a system that is far worse, not better.”

“Amendment supporters claim their proposal will protect our environment, but that’s just not true,” Mr. Howell explained. “Hometown Democracy will trap our communities into a pattern of sprawl that will endanger our state’s most environmentally sensitive areas.”

Mr. Howell serves as a Director at the law firm of Galloway, Johnson, Tompkins, Burr and Smith, practicing real estate and construction litigation. Mr. Howell is also the Public Affairs Chair of Northwest Florida NAIOP (National Association of Industrial and Office Properties) and Vice President-Elect of NAIOP Florida.

He has previously served as President of Pensacola Warrington Kiwanis, a board member of Pensacola Boys Base, and a board member of Florida Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse.

Floridians for Smarter Growth was founded by Sunshine State community and business leaders to fight extreme special interests bound to destroy Florida's unique quality-of-life under the guise of the Hometown Democracy amendment.
